On behalf of all members and guests of RCS Haven we would like to express our gratitude to the staff of Santander’s Glasgow office for repainting our premises. Last month, ten Santander employees put on their painting overalls as part of Santander’s ‘Community Days’ initiative. On 17 November, the staff from Santander’s Glasgow office spent a day repainting the RCS Haven, including the main hall, office and kitchen.  Santander's Community Days scheme encourages staff to take a day out of the office to volunteer with a local cause. Last year over 2,700 members of staff took part in 256 projects across the country, including refurbishing local schools, hospitals and helping with community projects.      

BEMIS and SPTC (Scottish Parent Teacher Council) are working together on a project - Gathered Together - to support parents   from ethnic and cultural minorities getting involved with their children's schools.  They are keen to identify barriers and concerns parents have in participating in their children's education.   Each school has a Parent Teacher Council, whereby parents have the opportunity to attend regular meetings and attend to observe, and to receive information, or they can put themselves forward for a more active role within the council.   These meeting may be held around once every one or two months depending on the school. Elaine Davis from RCS Haven would welcome any input on this from Russian speaking parents and will feed information back to BEMIS.

From November 2015 you will not be able to use ESOL qualifications as proof for citizenship and settlement applications.  To prove your knowledge of English the Home Office/UK Visas and Immigration will only accept Trinity SELT exams and IELTS.  In Scotland there is one Trinity SELT centre, which is on Queen Street in Glasgow.  For further information on the Trinity exams required to pass in relation to visa application type, and resources to aid in exam preparation, please see: https://www.trinityselt.co.uk/OEWeb/examInfo.do or contact to Elaine Davis who provides English lessons at RCS Haven  

What is Russia famous for? What words are similar in Russian and English and could you try and read those in Cyrillic? In how many countries Russian is spoken as the first language by many people? These and other questions were discussed at the Inverclyde Academy with S3 students during the Russian taster sessions provided by Natalya Krisanova, the passionate and highly experienced teacher from Russian Centre in Scotland Haven . Helped by her daughter, Dasha, S6 student of Boclair Academy, they provided the individual approach as much as possible. By the end of each session, students were even able to write their names in Cyrillic, read in Russian and make a short dialogue, and students got their 'matryoshka' stickers as small awards. Natalya and Dasha also inspired the students to learn languages by their knowledge of 4-5 languages. Dasha last year got four A at her language Highers.

RCS Haven are beginning free ESOL classes on Tuesday evenings which will be led by our TESOL qualified teacher, Elaine Davis.  Elaine graduated from a UK-based university and is a native speaker.  She has most recently taught English in Italy, and spent two years teaching in South Korea.
